Cherokees Going to Water: Paddle Event and BBQ

  • Sac State Aquatic Center 1901 Hazel Avenue Gold River, CA, 95670 United States (map)

Come spend the day on Lake Natoma with your fellow Cherokees!

Water has long been special to us as a people, with our Going to Water ceremony being especially sacred. Though our preferred body of water is rivers that flow, or what we call ᎦᏅᎯᏓ ᎠᏍᎦᏯ ganvhida asgaya (Long Man), Lake Natoma does have a current to it. We call them Long Man because his head is on the mountain top and he stretches out to the ocean.

We are tentatively planning this for August 8. However, if we cannot book for this date, our backup date will be August 22.

At this event, we will have a group kayak lesson reserved for 25 people.

The first to RSVP are guaranteed a spot and we will have a wait list.

After this lesson, we will be having a group BBQ with main dishes and non-alcoholic drinks provided by the CNCV. You may also choose to rent a kayak and spend more time on the water.

What to bring: a chair for each member of your party, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), shoes for the water, personal water, and a great attitude.

Please note that we will not be performing the Going to Water ceremony at this event.
